COURT OF APPEALS OF GEORGIA TO CLOSE CLERK'S OFFICE ONE DAY PER MONTH TO IMPLEMENT FURLOUGHS

M. Yvette Miller, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia, announced that the Court will implement furloughs in order to deal with the constriction of the state’s budget and the 5 percent withholding of the Court’s budget and three furloughs days as announced by Gov. Sonny Perdue. Chief Judge Miller said furloughs are the only viable option left to the Court since it reduced its workforce by 12 percent (10 positions) in the FY2009 budget.

The legislative leadership has indicated to the State Judiciary that the Legislature will support the Governor’s requested cuts during the regular budget amendment process when the Legislature convenes in January 2010. In order to ensure the Court can continue to operate until the end of the fiscal year, the Court is instituting furloughs for all employees beginning in September 2009.

The clerk’s office will be closed one furlough day a month through the end of the calendar year 2009. If your filing date falls on one of the days the court is closed, it will be extended until the next business day. A schedule of these days will be available by clicking on the Announcements hyperlink on the Court’s website.
