BRYAN M. CAVAN SWORN IN AS 47TH BAR PRESIDENT

Bryan M. Cavan was installed as president of the 40,000-plus member State Bar of Georgia on June 20 during the organization's annual meeting at Amelia Island, Fla. He serves as the 47th president of the association, succeeding Jeffrey O. Bramlett of Atlanta. Cavan, a member of the Atlanta firm Miller & Martin, PLLC, received his bachelor’s degree from Belmont Abbey College in 1964 and his law degree from Emory University School of Law in 1967. He was admitted to practice law in Georgia in 1967. Cavan moves into his new role with the State Bar having served on the Board of Governors since 1995, the Executive Committee since 1999 and, most recently, in the offices of secretary and president-elect.  He has also served on numerous professional and civic committees, and is a co-founder and president of the DeKalb Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, an organization created to assist low-income persons in need of legal help. He is a past president of the DeKalb Bar Association.

ABA HOUSE OF DELEGATES 

The ABA House of Delegates will convene during the course of the Annual Meeting in Chicago, Aug. 3-4, and will consider proposed resolutions submitted by its constituent organizations.

To review the resolutions and reports, go to the House of Delegates webpage and click on the report number, paying particular attention to Report 103 – ABA Model Act Governing the Representation of Children in Abuse, Neglect and Dependency Proceedings.

The entire Georgia delegation to the House would greatly benefit from any comments or observations you might have to any of the reports.

If you are interested, the proceedings of the House will be webcast, beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, and can be viewed on the
ABA's homepage. Just click on 2009 Annual Meeting on the lower right-hand section of the page.

Finally, the Georgia delegation will hold its annual caucus at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago Hotel, Grand Suite 2, Gold Level, East Tower. If you are going to be in town, you are cordially invited.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT - VETERANS AND SERVICEMEMBERS LEGAL PROJECT ATTORNEY

The State Bar of Georgia Pro Bono Project, a joint project of the State Bar of Georgia and the Georgia Legal Services Program, seeks an attorney to staff a new Veterans and Servicemembers Pro Bono and Lawyer Referral Program funded by the State Bar of Georgia. The mission of the Veterans and Servicemembers Pro Bono Program is to provide pro bono and paid referrals for veterans with disability claims and other legal matters to low-income servicemembers; provide pro bono and paid referrals to private attorneys in Georgia on a range of legal matters for servicemembers; and develop legal training programs and web content to support volunteer and referral attorneys. Candidates must have strong writing and communication skills, creativity, a desire to work in the public interest and project management and team skills. COURTS SHOULD PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED

In response to recent heath-related events regarding the H1N1 swine flu virus, Chief Justice Carol Hunstein and Justice Harold Melton have authored an article urging the courts throughout the state to prepare for a potential pandemic flu. VOLUNTEER FOR THE 2009 LAW SCHOOL ORIENTATIONS ON PROFESSIONALISM

The Committee on Professionalism is now seeking lawyers and judges to volunteer to return to your alma maters or to any of the schools to help give back part of what the profession has given you by dedicating a half day of your time this August. 17TH ANNUAL CLE AND LUNCHEON OF THE STATE BAR OF GEORGIA DIVERSITY PROGRAM

The State Bar of Georgia Diversity Program will present its 17th annual CLE and luncheon on Sept. 30. Speakers from corporate law offices, law firms and bar associations will present at this year's CLE and discuss how the economic crisis is impacting diversity in the legal profession and how the legal community is reacting to the downturn. NATIONAL PRO BONO CELEBRATION - OCTOBER 25-31

The American Bar Association is launching its first annual National Pro Bono Celebration Oct. 25-31. If your local voluntary bar association is interested in organizing, developing and implementing a celebration plan, visit the ABA Pro Bono Celebration Toolkit site. Contact the State Bar Pro Bono Project or your local legal services or pro bono program for project ideas.

FREE CASEMAKER TRAINING OFFERED THROUGH THE STATE BAR

Free online legal research is available to all Bar members. Learn how to effectively use and navigate the Georgia Casemaker library. A training class will be offered at the Bar Center on Thursday, July 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. The sessions are limited to the first 10 attendees. Complete a registration form, which can be submitted by e-mail or printed and faxed to Kim Henry at 404-527-8717 by noon on the day before the class is scheduled.
