Cornerstones of FreedomSM
The Bar's ongoing Cornerstones of FreedomSM program is back on
the airwaves with a new public service announcement. From Nov. 10 through
Nov. 23, the State Bar is broadcasting its message on television throughout
Georgia. If you would like to view the public service announcement, please visit
our website.
Run-off Election for Georgia Court
of Appeals
Georgia voters will decide who will succeed Georgia Court of Appeals Judge
John H. Ruffin Jr. in a Dec. 2 run-off election. In the State Bar’s
judicial poll, Georgia lawyers educated in the candidates evaluated all
seven candidates. The remaining two who will face each other in the run-off
election were evaluated as follows:

This poll was commissioned by the State Bar of Georgia’s Board of
Governors, administered by its Elections Committee and conducted by
Election Services Corporation. The State Bar does not endorse candidates
for judicial office, but has conducted a survey of its membership in
statewide races since 1970 to provide voters with guidance on the contested
appellate races. The Bar conducts these polls on an impartial basis as a
public service to aid Georgia voters in making informed decisions.
Legal Services for Military Veterans
& Servicemembers Committee Survey
The Legal Services for Military Veterans & Servicemembers Committee has
developed a survey for Georgia lawyers in an effort to gauge the nature and
scope of services our Bar members are prepared to provide for members,
reservists and veterans. Your input will help the committee and the State
Bar accurately identify opportunities for Georgia lawyers to represent
veterans and servicemembers. The committee appreciates your willingness to
participate in helping determine the best ways to assist with the unmet
legal services needs of Georgia's military personnel.
At the State Bar’s Midyear Meeting on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009,
ICLE will conduct a free
seminar providing continuing legal education on law affecting servicemembers
and veterans. Please complete the survey and watch for details on this timely
opportunity for free CLE.
Attorney Coaches for High School
Mock Trial Needed
The 2009 Georgia High School Mock Trial Competition season is underway.
There are several teams throughout the state that are still in need of
attorney coaches. The contact information for these teams may be found on
our website under
the Attorney Volunteer section. (Attorney coaches may receive CLE credit
for coaching a mock trial team.) Also, they are in need of judging panel
volunteers for the regional competitions (in cities statewide in early
February), for the State Finals competition (in Lawrenceville on March 14
and 15) and for the National Competition (in Atlanta on May 8 and 9).
Judging panel volunteer forms may be found online under the Attorney
Volunteer section, as well. Thank you for your support of the Georgia High
School Mock Trial Competition.
