Legal Services for Military Veterans & Servicemembers
Committee Survey
The Legal Services for Military Veterans & Servicemembers Committee has
developed a survey for Georgia lawyers in an effort to gauge the nature and
scope of services our Bar members are prepared to provide for members,
reservists and veterans. Your input will help the committee, the State Bar
and ICLE accurately identify and shape continuing legal education programs
Georgia lawyers can use to help them in the representation of veterans and
servicemembers. Please complete the survey no later than Oct. 31. The committee appreciates your
willingness to participate in helping determine the best ways to assist
with the unmet legal services needs of Georgia's military personnel.
2008 Judicial Poll for the Contested Court of Appeals
Judgeship
Since 1970, the State Bar of Georgia has conducted a poll of Georgia
lawyers to provide input on all contested statewide judicial races. The Bar
does not endorse or oppose any candidate, but does make public the results
of the lawyer poll to assist Georgia citizens in making informed choices in
these statewide elections. The 2008 Judicial Qualifications Poll was mailed
to Bar members Sept. 12. The results of the poll will be released to the
media Oct. 14. Thank you for providing this important service to the
public.
State Bar of Georgia's Young Lawyers Division Earns National
Recognition
The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the State Bar of Georgia received six
major awards in the 2007-08 Awards of Achievement program sponsored by the
YLD of the American Bar Association (ABA) during the national organization's
annual meeting Aug. 7-10 in New York.
The Georgia YLD won the Service to the Bar, first place
(overall), for the Model Juvenile Code Project, an effort to make the code
better organized, more internally consistent and reflective of
research-based best practices. The project also took second place in the
Service to the Bar category for Division IA.
Competing in Division IA with states having 8,000 or more YLD
members, the Georgia YLD won the following national awards:
- Minority Project, first place, for the YLD
Leadership Academy, an annual networking program with more than 50
young lawyers from throughout the state participating each year.
- Comprehensive, second place, for the broad range of
programming conducted by the Georgia YLD last year.
- Newsletter, second place, for the quarterly YLD
Review member publication.
- Service to the Public, second place, for the Soiree
de la Chance fund raiser, which took in more than $45,000, with
proceeds going to benefit HERO for Children, an Atlanta-based
nonprofit organization that assists Georgia children who are infected
with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
In addition, the Savannah Bar Association YLD received first
place in the Service to the Public category for its division for the Mock
Trial of the Slave Ship Wanderer project.
Raising Awareness of Lawyers and Judges Serving the Public
The Bar's ongoing Cornerstones of Freedom program is a multi-dimensional
communications effort designed to inform and educate the public about the
judicial branch of government and the role of the legal profession. One
dimension of Cornerstones is the submission of op-eds and letters to the
editors of local papers across the state recognizing the contributions
lawyers and judges make in their communities. From June 4 through Aug. 29,
these local press items acknowledging the good works of judges and lawyers
reached a circulation of almost 1.3 million readers. Download the list of published articles for a detailed breakdown of when and
where those articles appeared.
We have a rich supply of good works by Georgia’s lawyers and
judges, but our local news outreach effort is only as good as the intelligence
we gather from lawyers and judges around the State who inform us when a Bar
member receives an award, is elected or appointed to a position of
leadership in their community, or a bar association has earned recognition
for good works in a community.
Please help your Bar build this effort by informing us
whenever you, a lawyer or judge in your community, or your local bar
association has earned recognition for service to the public or your local
community. E-mails may be directed to president@gabar.org,
cliffb@gabar.org or jenniferm@gabar.org. With your input,
we can help the public understand the important and positive contributions
our judges and lawyers make in their local communities on a daily basis.
