Fellows Program
In 1982, the State Bar of Georgia's offices were in the Flat Iron Building; Frank Love was President of the State Bar of Georgia, and he came up with the idea of creating a Fellows Program modeled on the American Bar Foundation, and raising money for worthy Bar causes that could not be funded by mandatory bar dues. So a list of lawyers around the state was circulated, invitations went out, and the Fellows Program was created.
Not too long thereafter, the Supreme Court approved a voluntary IOLTA program and a number of firms participated. The Fellows program languished. In 1998, the Lawyers Foundation of Georgia was created with the vision of outstanding legal professionals who administer a fund to enhance the system of justice, to support the lawyers who serve it, and to assist the community served by it. The fellows program was transferred to the Lawyers Foundation, and became the backbone of the Foundation, providing not only funds, but inspiration and ideals as well. When the Fellows Program was founded, membership was limited to 3% of the active membership of the State Bar. That limit has been raised to 4%.
The invitation to membership in the Fellows Program is an honor that recognizes those lawyers whose public and private careers demonstrate outstanding legal abilities and a devotion to their communities. When new Fellows are nominated, we look for attorneys whose careers have upheld the highest standards and who appreciate the values supported by the Foundation.
How Fellows Gifts are Used
Fellows gifts are divided between the grants programs currently in place and the Lawyers Foundation Endowment where they help secure the future of the Foundation and its programs and grants. More Information.
Fellows Rosters
There Are Three Categories of Fellows:
Fellows - Attorneys who were nominated to Fellowship, and accepted that nomination. They made their pledge and begun to contribute towards that pledge.
Life Fellows - Attorneys who have completed their pledge.
Sustaining Fellows - Attorneys who have chosen to continue their financial support of the LFG after completing their pledge. A Life Fellow is considered a Sustaining Fellow during any fiscal year they make a contribution of $250 or more. Our fiscal year runs from July to June.
