Update on Legal Services Funding

Because we are a unified state bar, the activities of the State Bar of Georgia related to public policy advocacy are governed by Keller v. State Bar of California, 496 U.S. 1 (1990), which limits our use of your annual member dues to regulating the legal profession and improving the quality of legal services offered to the public.

Each year, the Board of Governors and Executive Committee closely scrutinize the advocacy agenda proposed by the American Bar Association. Among the issues proposed by the ABA this year is advocating for federal funding for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), which supports state legal aid organizations, including the Georgia Legal Services Program and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. Congress is presently considering budget proposals that would impact LSC funding for the next fiscal year.

Support for the adequate funding of legal services to ensure access to justice for all Georgians is one of the priorities of the State Bar of Georgia's strategic plan, which was approved by our Board of Governors last year. We encourage you to visit www.defendlegalaid.org, where you will find resources and information about LSC funding and a way for you to support efforts to ensure continued federal funding for these vital legal services.
